A CIRCULAR
ECONOMY
PROFITABLE
TO ALL
Patterns past and present of the planet’s use of resources have led to high levels of pollution, spoliation of the environment and the depletion of natural reserves.
Today, it is vital that we disconnect economic growth from the use of resources and move towards circular systems of production and consumption in order to achieve climate neutrality for the EU by 2050.
Sustainable Europe thus involves three major objectives: promoting eco-design, empowering citizen consumers and public procurement, and supporting industry's move towards a circular economy. Various sectors of activity are targeted and are the focus of specific strategies to drive the "Green Deal" and the transition to sustainable production and consumption models.
Challenges and opportunities
Transversal by nature, the circular economy - whether relating to mobility, cities, territories, innovation or R&D - represents a real shift in paradigm for companies and implies profound change.
The virtuous circle of the circular economy is struggling to get off the ground. In a report published in July 2023, the European Court of Auditors notes that the progress made by member states with the circular economy remains slow, too slow even to hope to achieve the targets set for 2030. It deplores the fact that funding is largely used for waste management, to the detriment of design and production processes. The crisis of the linear economic model should actually sow the seeds of a new model. Nevertheless, the circular economy, favored by underlying trends linked to environmental and regulatory restrictions and changing consumer patterns, will need to overcome a number of difficulties. Agility, speed of implementation, the ability to innovate and to integrate all stakeholders are just some of the key capabilities we need to develop if the shift is to be successful. So how do we get all the players in the value chain on board in the long term?
IN PRACTICE
Legislation, the legal framework and public incentives will play a key role, and the effectiveness of public policies will be decisive here, but it is the coordinated mobilization of all players that will ensure the success of the whole process. The Movin'On Communities of Interest mobilized on the subject offer all stakeholders a trustworthy environment to work together around a common position and solution deliverables that transcend and strengthen individual ventures.
