Goods Transport Intermodality in, from & to the Dunkirk Port

What infrastructure will the Dunkirk industrial port area need to increase multimodal transfer, and thus achieve its dual objective of growth and successful ecological transition?

powered by

Dunkerque

Today, Dunkirk is opening a new chapter in its history, drawing on its creative and industrial strength, international outlook and the many assets across the region. As France's third-largest port in terms of traffic, Dunkirk's industrial port zone is expanding constantly. The expected tripling of container traffic over the next decade will lead to a massive increase in the number of heavy goods vehicles in the port area by 2035. And with the creation of 20,000 direct jobs generated by the establishment of various companies, the port needs more than ever to plan for responsible growth in the interests of all stakeholders.

The Grand Port Maritime de Dunkerque has embarked on a considerable development program, illustrated by the setting up of numerous industrial sites (Verkor and Prologium battery gigafactories, XTC Orano, SNF Flocryl, Clarebout potatoes).

Alongside this land development, the region has already demonstrated its pioneering role in clean energy, with the future setting up of the Graveline EPR and an offshore wind farm, as well as the construction of 2 green hydrogen production units. The private sector is also playing its part, with considerable investment in the hydrogen-powered carbon draw-down of steel mills.

What impact are we aiming for?

Help decarbonize the transport of goods in the Dunkirk port through the optimal transport modes mix.

Involve the players in the industrial port zone in the port's decarbonization objectives with regard to modal shift, identify the most important and economically viable projects, and launch the most urgent actions.

What are we creating?

Land transport

Define the specifications for dedicated truck lanes linking the southern industrial zone, the container terminal and logistics platforms.

Rail transport

Identify business opportunities for a combined transport terminal connected to rail highways.

River transport

Identify development prospects thanks to the forthcoming commissioning of the Seine Nord Europe canal.
