Exploring the Future of Intercity & Regional Mobility in Europe by 2040

As part of a Movin’On Community of Interest, our members Alstom, Michelin, Stellantis, and TotalEnergies have imagined four contrasted foresight scenarios exploring the possible futures of passenger mobility across Europe for distances of 100–500 km.

These scenarios, both qualified and quantified, provide a cross-sectorial view of the transformations likely to reshape intercity and regional travel by 2040. They are designed to help stakeholders anticipate the large-scale transformations that will shape this strategic segment.

CURRENT LANDSCAPE

  • Cars dominate this mobility segment with 72% modal share, mostly for leisure and personal trips.
  • Two types of mobility can be distinguished: short-distance mobility, which is daily, professional, and largely constrained, and long-distance mobility, which is related to holidays or opportunities and has grown significantly with the advent of low-cost air travel.
  • Short-distance and long-distance mobility position 100–500 km travel as a strategic segment with high potential for transformation.

“What follows is both a framework for thinking together and a tool for acting together, to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s mobility with coherence, imagination, and purpose.”
 Bruno Bourdon, Movin’On

“These scenarios act as a mirror, reflecting the consequences of our choices and encouraging us to shape a future that balances the needs of people and the planet.” » Juliana Buelvas Ceballos, Alstom

With this report, embrace the future of intercity and regional mobility, anticipate its impact and shape your strategy.
