Autonomous vehicles: are local authorities ready to roll out autonomous mobility?

66% of elected representatives think that autonomous mobility would be a good thing for their territory, a view shared by the Movin'On Community of Interest for autonomous vehicles, launched by MACIF in 2019.

This working group is committed to the "shared" autonomous vehicle as a means of promoting inclusive mobility, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas. Today, it is releasing a world-first survey of 1,090 local councillors, carried out in partnership with the Association des Maires Ruraux de France (AMRF/Association of Rural Mayors) to get their views on mobility.

This survey is all the more important in that no study, in France or internationally, has so far questioned their perception of mobility. And this at a time when local councillors have become key players through the Mobility Orientation Act (Loi d'Orientation des Mobilités - LOM).

In 2021, the Autonomous Vehicle Community of Interest consisted of 11 companies - BNP Paribas Cardif, Faurecia, Groupama, Kantar, MACIF, MAIF, Michelin, Microsoft, Orange, SNCF and Vinci - and today includes Beti and Navya with a view to testing automated vehicles in the Val de Drôme in 2022. It is therefore mobilizing around a key theme: "mobility for all, autonomy for all via shared autonomous vehicles".

Like most French people, local councillors still know little about autonomous vehicles. However, they are fully aware of the opportunities offered by shared and collective autonomous mobility. It is a hopeful way of solving local mobility issues and of overcoming some of the limitations of public transport.

Key figures revealed by the survey

  • Like most French people, local councillors know little about autonomous vehicles: only 30% have seen one and only 9% have given them a try.
  • 66 % of elected representatives think that autonomous mobility would be a good thing for their region.
  • Yet, to roll out this type of solution is consider by 77 % of them as difficult
  • Local elected officials and the French are looking ahead to different kinds of autonomous vehicle.
  • Private cars are still the preferred choice for 76% of French people.
  • Conversely, 44% of elected representatives who responded said they preferred autonomous public transport (such as autonomous shuttles), and
  • 38% spoke of autonomous on-demand transport (like a robot-taxi).
