End-to-end people – Seamless and carless vacations

In Europe, the width of new cars is increasing by an average of 1cm every two years. These are the findings of a study conducted by Transport & Environment (T&E). In many countries, around half of all new cars sold are already too wide for the minimum street parking space. While our ever-wider cars are hardly suited to city driving, their size (large trunk volume and more interior space) seems better tailored to occasional needs such as vacations or a weekend getaway. On average, a compact city car is perfectly suited to 90% of everything you use it for, but what about the other 10%, when you go on vacation, for example?

Challenges and Opportunies

Encouraging the adoption of intermediate vehicles suited to more restrained uses is one of Europe’s levers for action to achieve its ambitions in terms of carbon draw-down, but what about when people go on vacation? Cars are more than ever synonymous with freedom and comfort, so how can we offer users a viable alternative and a seamless experience? How do you travel without a car? Which alternative means of transport should you choose? And once you’re there, how do you get around for each daily outing? To meet sometimes a hectic schedule and at any time of day?

The equation of a seamless, car-free vacation is anything but simple, and yet it’s one that is highly strategic when it comes to promoting greater moderation.

In practice

The Movin’On Community of Interest is setting out to demonstrate that a car-free holiday experience is possible. Working in close collaboration with the city of Biarritz, its hoteliers, service providers and mobility operators, the ecosystem’s partners will produce a Proof of Concept (PoC). The local ecosystem is a keen proponent of responsible tourism and intends to take up the challenge of town-center parking in Biarritz and the Basque country, one that is shared by many tourist destinations.

Our members will also be able to draw on the support of a key player whose very mission is to make mobility an experience: Michelin’s Cartes & Guides (Michelin Editions).

Bring your Expertise

Join the organizations that have already expressed an interest in carrying out this PoC in the seaside town of Biarritz, and help make car-free vacations a seamless experience, encouraging the use of vehicles that are just the right size for everyday use, or even Mobility as a Service on a daily basis.

Take part and connect with our cross-sectoral expert

In 2024, Movin’On is renewing its commitment to the ambitious vision set out by the European Green Deal. To achieve the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, legislative measures include initiatives covering climate, the environment, energy, transportation, industry and sustainable finance – all of which are closely linked. The European Commission has furthermore stressed “the need for a comprehensive, cross-sectoral approach, encompassing all relevant sectors to achieve the ultimate climate objective”. Movin’On, as a business-led, multi-modal and cross-sectoral ecosystem, is perfectly in line with this approach.

We are therefore proud to announce our collective commitment throughout the year to achieving one goal: to help make the decarbonization of land transportation in Europe a success, in line with the objectives of the “Fit for 55” package by the year 2030 and in tune with the signing of the call for “Fossil-Free Transportation” initiated by our long-standing institutional partner SLOCAT.

Pease discover the themes we have together defined to meet this challenge, and for you, too, to collectively be a real part of it: Energy – Intermodality – Circular economy – Financing the transition – Inclusive mobility – Supporting the transition. – Sovereignty

These 7 themes are the starting point for our 2024 Communities of Interest, working groups that bring together various ecosystem stakeholders. They study the burning question of sustainable mobility, develop a common vision and jointly experiment with new solutions.
